Young ECNL Stars Shine in USL2 Debuts

Posted July 16, 2023

STA prides itself in creating pathways for its younger players, and several ECNL boys earned opportunities to make their USL2 debuts this season with FC Motown STA.

Giacomo Zizza, a rising senior, made his first USL2 appearance on May 20th against Hudson Valley Hammers in front of a home crowd. 04/05 ECNL teammates Patrick Weir, Gabriel Ruitenberg and Josh Virgil also registered minutes this season with FC Motown STA.

The youngest player to earn a USL2 cap this year was Henry Weston at 17 years old. Weston scored a hat trick to help lift the squad to a 6-0 victory against Ironbound SC on July 12th.

“Providing this pathway for our current ECNL boys and USL Academy players was one of the most important things to me at the start of this partnership, and most importantly, I’m glad that our youngest boys were there to see it and hopefully be inspired by the well-deserved opportunity afforded to them,” said USL2 Head Coach Tom Shields.
