FC Motown STA’s Historic Season Comes to an End

Posted July 22, 2024

The 2024 FC Motown STA team had a historic season, finishing with a record of 8-1-3, the club’s best performance to date. The squad also scored the most goals in Metropolitan Division play with 37 total, and had its longest unbeaten run of 11 games straight. FC Motown STA ended the regular season in second place, its best finish ever, and qualified for playoffs for the first time in program history.

After losing its opening game 3-1 to the Long Island Rough Riders (the eventual Metropolitan Division champions), FC Motown never looked back and went on an 11-game unbeaten streak.

“Overall the season has gone well,” said forward Maxwell Murray. “We got off to a slow start trying to figure out how to play with each other’s strengths, but once we figured that out we had great success.”

Some of the biggest moments of the 2024 campaign was the 4-0 win over Hudson Valley Hammers, and an 8-1 victory against Ironbound SC. These two matches were considered to be momentum boosters as the squad got closer to qualifying for playoffs for the first time since FC Motown STA joined USL League Two in 2022.

“Right off the bat, you could tell that this is a good group of guys and we start to understand each other better and it showed on the field,” said Murray. “Making the playoffs is always a goal when looking forward to the summer. In a league like USL2 where the competition is high, you also want to be a part of the top teams, and making a deep run in playoffs would be a great achievement.”

FC Motown STA punched its ticket to The Playoffs in the final game of season on July 13. In a “must-win” scenario, the team beat Staten Island ASC 5-0 on the road to make program history. FC Motown STA was one of nine clubs earning its first-ever League Two playoff berth.

Unfortunately, the club’s season came to an end in a 3-1 loss in extra time against the Western Mass Pioneers. The boys gave it their all during the game, and many were proud to have a great season together despite the loss.

“We are excited to build on this year’s success, and just want to extend a huge congratulations and thank you to those involved for all of their efforts and support,” said Head Coach Tom Shields. “Good luck to our guys as they return to their college programs, we’ll be watching and are excited to see what comes next for those that are draft-eligible in the inter.”
